Norfolk, VA - Richard E. "Dick" McPhee Sr., 81, of 114 Cromwell Parkway, Cromwell House passed away Friday morning, June 29, 2012 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation- Harbour Pointe on Hampton Blvd, Norfolk, VA following a period of illness and declining health.
Dick was born in Braintree, Mass outside of Boston. He attended the Farm and Trades School (Thompson Academy) and received his high school diploma from Dorchester High School. He is survived by his two sons, Rick McPhee and his wife Sonal of Suffolk, VA., and George McPhee of Norfolk, VA.; youngest sister, Judy Zyirek of Framingham, Mass; a brother in law, Francis "Obie" O'Brien of Randolph.; three grandsons, Ryan, Justin and Dylan; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six sisters, Beverly Campbell of Falmouth, Mass., Sylvia Hickey of Evansville, Ky., Marjorie Richardson of Chelmsford, Mass., Gloria Vail of Portsmouth, NH., Nan Cohen of Readville, Mass., and Edna O'Brien of Randolph, Mass.
A veteran and musician, Dick was proud of his service to his country and the opportunity to entertain the troops at home and abroad. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1952. He also served two years in the Massachusetts National Guard, specializing in music. He spent most of his working career in sales.
Dick spent the last nine years of his life as a resident of Clearwater, FL enjoying his retirement and the tranquility of the beach. Passions from his early days included classical music, jazz, opera, reading, chess and baseball. A good English comedy was always appreciated.
A wake will be held on Tuesday July 10 from 5p.m. to 7p.m. in the chapel at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 7400 Hampton Blvd, Norfolk VA 23505. A funeral will be held the following morning, July 11, at 10a.m. at the same location.
