Jennie May Schniedwind

Virginia Beach – Jennie May Schniedwind passed away July 25, 2010 with her four children by her side. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday with children, grandchildren, niece and nephew, friends and caregivers from Marian Manor in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia to CDR Thomas C. and Jennie Edrington, who preceded her in death. She spent her entire life as a Navy daughter, sister, spouse, and mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, CAPT Robert Francis Schniedwind (USN, Ret.). They were married on June 23, 1951. She is survived by her four children, Kathleen Anne, Normal, IL; CDR Robert Francis Schniedwind Jr. (USN, Ret.) (Susan), Virginia Beach, Virginia; Liesel Mary Berwanger (Carey), Norfolk, VA; Thomas Edrington Schniedwind (Kelley), Grasonville, Md; nine grandchildren, Robert Francis Schniedwind III, Virginia Beach, Virginia; Stephanie Alsobrooks (Brian), Ft. Riley, Kansas; Jocelyn O'Brien, Las Vegas, Nevada; Sarah Abbott, Norfolk, Virginia; Brendan, Connor, Cammilla, Harold, and Charles Schniedwind, Grasonville, Maryland; and two great-grandchildren, Lilianyah and Lucien Alsobrooks, Ft. Riley, Kansas.

She lived all over the United States from Coronado, California to Newport, Rhode Island, and many places in between. She especially loved the time she spent in Naples, Italy while Robert was stationed there in the Navy. Some of her favorite memories were of exploring caves in Yorktown, Virginia, and she would often share the history of Generals Washington and Cornwallis with her children.

She dabbled in painting, worked as a newspaper editor, assembled military aircraft alongside her mother during World War II, was a USN Gray Lady, and for many years she was a volunteer at the Old Coast Guard Lifesaving Museum in Virginia Beach. She loved poetry and quoted it often. She also loved nature and animals, of which she had many over her lifetime.

She taught her children many lessons, the most important of which were to help those less fortunate, to be respectful, to always use proper grammar, and to appreciate history. She led by example, and she had an enormous capacity to forgive. We will all miss her very much, and we will carry on the lessons she taught.

She will be interred with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery in a private family ceremony at a later date. Inquiries can be directed to Altmeyer Funeral Homes at www.altmeyer.com .

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA at www.vbspca.com, or Virginia Special Olympics at www.specialolympicsva.org.

The family sincerely thanks the nurses and staff at Marian Manor and Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care you provided Jennie in the last seven months. You made her happy every day.

We love you mom, granny, aunt and friend. We are happy that you are at peace.
