Guestbook for Henry Francis Bolin, Jr. Showing 1 - 25 of 35 entries.

Dear Bolins,

We have never met anyone quite like Hank. When our daughter Leanne married his son Henry, we realized that we had joined forces with a family of extraordinary strength and character.

This man was gifted with an immense capacity to embrace life with enthusiasm, speak and act with honesty and set an example for his family, friends and co-workers. Each of the Bolins carries Hank’s enduring qualities. He was a gentle man with strong convictions, a lover of God’s handiwork, an accomplished musician, airman, seaman, defender of life, and a true friend.

Attending his memorial service was an uplifting experience and an honor to read these proverbs by which Hank lived his life:

Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Write them deep within your heart. Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.

With great love and affection,

Henry, Alex, Amy, MJ,
I am so sorry to hear that Hank passed away.
I first met your Dad in the early 70's when we lived in Carolanne Farms and Coached youth sports at Arrowhead Elementary, Va. Beach.
Some years later, we became neighbors in Brandon as bachelors.
He was a great friend and a very gracious man.
My fondest memory was when he took my brother, his wife, from LA, my sister from IN, and myself sailing.
We all still talk about that voyage. It is a memory we will cherish for a lifetime.
The obituary was a beautiful tribute to Hank.
My prayers go out to you and hope you can recall his strong faith in God to help during this time of grieving.
He was so very proud of you all.

May God bless you,

My memories of Hank go back to 1976 when I met him simply as "Mary Jean's father". During a party at the Bolin house in Kempsville 2 young men had a disagreement in a very crowded kitchen. As the discussion came to blows an apparition appeared and swept the boys out the door. Moments later Hank reappeared calm, cool and collected having handled the incident with no noise and little mess. We knew instantly that there was something special about Mr. Bolin. I next met Hank in 1982 was when I was the Assistant Director of the YMCA Fitness Center in Norfolk. Hank was one of the regulars and one that I looked forward to seeing as I would ALWAYS leave the conversation feeling better. We would talk about common interests like lacrosse and sailing but whatever started the conversation Hank would always bring me up to date on his greatest love- his family. We were surprised by and greatly enjoyed yet another talent of Hank's when he sat down at a piano and led us in singing during a Christmas party. He was a a great role model for many and one of the reasons I joined the FBI. Hank's life was one well lived and well loved. He truly represented the concepts of Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity. For that and many other things he will be missed. Fair winds and following seas my friend. Thank you.

To Hank Bolin's Family and Friends:
I first met Hank more than 28 years ago when I became an Assistant U.S. Attorney. I did not meet him in Court but at the YMCA, one of his favorite places. He had the greatest ever present smile the I have ever seen on a man. I do not think that I ever left Hank without feeling more upbeat. I will always remember his positive and uplifting nature.

I grew up watching Hank play for DHS and then Hobart College. He always had time for the kids and he was one of my heros. I followed him to Hobart and into the USMC as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot in 1962 - buying my dress blues from him at graduation. As I reported to him at our last Hobart letterman reunion, my son (LtCol, USMC) now has that same set of dress blues. Although I cannot be there tomorrow, I will have him and his family in my prayers. Semper Fi, old friend!

To Hank's family, my deepest sympathy. I met Hank in 1980 when I became an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Hank and I also shared a love of flying as I was a Naval Aviator. We also often worked out at the same time at the YMCA. Hank was always upbeat and great to talk to about business, sports, or flying. I know you all will miss him, as will his wide group of friends and colleagues. I am grateful for the opportunity to have known and worked with Hank. We will all cherish his memory.

With warmest personal regards and condolences,

Jim Metcalfe, U.S. Attorney's Office
